Last Red Epiphyllum Bloom

last redFor 2008, that is. Enjoy it while you can. Click the image for the 800×600 view.

We had a bumper crop of these beautiful red blossoms this spring – the plant produced over a dozen of them. Last year I think we only had two.

So that does it for the red and yellow ones, but the white one already produced one flower. I missed getting a photo of it since the white flower plant is on the side of the house where there isn’t much foot traffic. There is another bud, quite small at this time, that I will start checking on a daily basis now that I know it’s there.

More Confused Easter Lilies

confused-lilies.jpgThese lilies have been confused before. They bloomed last December, way before the Easter season. I cut them all the way down after the blooms all faded. Now, they’re in full Easter mode, but a bit late for the early Easter we had this year. Maybe next year they will be on schedule, but then, I enjoy them whenever they decide to come out. I’ll have pictures of new Easter lilies to display before too long.

Island Express Helicopter Crash

Readers here may or may not know that I know a thing or two about helicopters – I have an airline transport helicopter rating with hundreds of hours of instruction given, charters flown and cross-country ferry flights. I have had a mishap or two along the way, but I’m still here to blog about it.

I can’t comment about the crash of the Island Express helicopter on Catalina Island other than to observe that the pilot had a lot of experience and that the weather conditions were certainly less than optimal. The FAA and NTSB state that the investigation might take up to a year to complete. We offer our condolences to the families and friends of the victims in this terrible accident.

We have been passengers several times on Island Express – we were married in Avalon, and often go back, especially for our anniversary.

We’re going again this year as well and we’re planning to fly over on Island Express helicopters. We believe that it is a safe and enjoyable way to cross the channel.

So, with that in mind, click on the video to the right and see for yourself just how nice an adventure you have when taking the helicopter to the Island.

Conflicting Ballots?

This week, we filled out our absentee ballots. Everything was fine until I happened to notice that the ballot pamphlets were in conflict with each other. For the office of city council members, one instructed vote for one while the other instructed ‘for no more than four.’ Verna’s pamphlet is on the left.

I attempted to contact the Los Angeles County Clerk’s office, but as everyone knows, that is a bottleneck. I waited more time than I had and finally gave up.

Has anyone else noticed this? I believe the vote for no more than four applies, but wonder how many absentees will only vote for one.

Point Vicente Whale Watching Site

I took a series of snapshots with my Canon A710IS while I stood on the main observation deck of the Point Vicente Interpretive Center. At home, I used the photo stitch utility that comes with the camera to create this nice panoramic view of the main whale watching area at the center. From left to right you can see the Point Vicente Lighthouse, Catalina Island and Verna with camera in hand holding Bear‘s leash. Further right is the pathway along the cliffs, the Malibu mountains in the distance and finally the top of the amphitheater at the right.

You don’t have to pick out the features in the thumbnail below – you can click on the image for a closer look.

Happy Memorial Day

During a drive to the Palos Verdes peninsula today I took this shot of the array of flags that greet visitors to the City of Palos Verdes Estates.

We had a fantastic BBQ in the backyard after the drive. We hope everyone enjoyed their holiday as much as we did!
