The Statue of St. Monica

santa-monica.jpgOur dentist has his practice in Santa Monica, California. Today, I went there to get my semi-annual dental maintenance. I left in plenty of time, and I arrived in the area early. So I took a walk up to Palisades Park which is not far from the dentist.

I took a lot of pictures of the buildings and scenery there, including this shot of the statue of Santa Monica. I couldn’t find out a lot about her on the net, but she was sculpted by Eugene Morahan in 1934. She stands in Palisades Park with her back to the bay named after her.

Mom’s 89th Birthday

Mom in her Wedding DressHappy birthday to my Mother, Kate.

Kate was born on April 23, 1920 and grew up in San Pedro and Long Beach, CA. She married my Dad in December 1938. Her children were born in 1941 (Bill), 1943 (that would be me), 1946 (Jim) and 1954 (Krystal). She has numerous grand kids and great-grand kids.

Mom currently lives in the foothills near the Sunland/Tujunga area.

Happy Birthday Mom – We love you!

“Peanut” Cactus

When I saw the number of flower stalks on this Peanut Cactus in the garden shop, I just had to put it into the cart. Today, it produced this beautiful red flower. This cactus reminds me of the “Claret Cup” cactus, which also gets beautiful red flowers (and attracts hummingbirds). Click on the image to enlarge.

Tiger Lilies

I just had to throw these in the shopping cart last weekend while we were shopping at Lowe’s for garden supplies. I took this photo this morning in indirect sunlight. It’s a very happy springtime in the patio.

I just love all my flowers. Click the image to enlarge.

Lizard in 3D

California Brown LizardI took this 3D image of a small brown lizard on our recent visit to the Botanic Gardens. I found it perched on a chunk of dried out wood in the cactus and succulents garden. It posed long enough for me to take the pair of images necessary for the 3D effect. Click on the image to enlarge.

I was surprised at the number and variety of lizards on the USGS web page that are indigenous to the California Coastal area. This one is likely a ‘small scaled lizard,’ commonly found in both southern California and Baja.

If you don’t have your free pair of 3D Glasses yet, you can see the 2D image here.

Orange and Yellow Tulip

The fresh cut flowers at the supermarket flower concession didn’t look that good to me this week, so I bought some tulips in a pot. After I watered them on Friday, they suddenly sprouted into these beautiful orange with yellow highlights tulips. Click on the image to enlarge.
