An Unusual Bearded Iris

We went to the Botanic Gardens today. I took almost 200 photos while we were there, so it was hard to pick one flower out of the many, many beautiful flowers blooming in the garden today. This bearded iris, however, was both beautiful and had this unusual burnt umber color. Click on the image to enlarge.

Burnt Umber Iris

JFK Memorial Fountain in 3D

jfl-memorial.pngThis fountain is located on Cabrillo and Marcelina in Old Downtown Torrance. The fountain is a gift to the city of Torrance from Mrs. Celia Pons. The fountain was dedicated to the memory of the Late President on September 14, 1964.

Anybody that can remember November 22, 1963 will almost certainly remember where they were and what they were doing when they got the news about the slain president. My ‘where I was and what I was doing’ story takes me back to when I was on active duty in the U.S. Navy. I was stationed at the Naval Air Station, Point Mugu, California. After driving one of the Pilots to the administration building, I was returning to the flight line in the division’s Jeep. One of the division petty officers was in his car in the parking lot listening to the radio. He said “they shot the president!” For the next few days, the base commander directed all sailors to wear dress or undress blues instead of the usual dungarees. I remember riding back to Santa Monica along the coastline (SR 1) and seeing a throng of media outside of the beachfront home belonging to Peter Lawford who was married to one of Kennedy’s sisters. Radio stations played nothing but dreadful dirge music, as I recall.

Indecision

Irisdaisies.jpgNeither of us could decide which of the only two pictures I took in the garden today should appear in today’s post. So why not both? Click on one or the other of the two thumbnails to enlarge.

Pale Blush Asian Lily

Kathryn

This week I have these beautiful Asian Lilies in the vase. According to the label on the wrapper, these are called “Kathryn:”

These gracefully open to form backward curving orange-pink petals brushing to a pearl-white center and throat.
