Vacation

Camera Casualty

camera.jpgOur recent vacation to visit friends on the Colorado River was great. We both had a lot of fun and enjoyed our friends and their friends company. There was one small glitch when I waded from the riverbank out to a pontoon boat; I totally forgot that my little SX110IS camera was in the cargo compartment of my shorts. The camera was off, of course, but water leaked into the battery compartment, the LCD display and other electro-mechanical stuff.

I didn’t discover the problem until much later in the day. I noticed that the display looked sort of funny with discoloration around the edge. When I tried to turn on the camera it was pretty much DOA. I removed the memory card from the camera and found that all the photos taken before the dunking were still in memory.

Fortunately, I recently purchased another camera, a Canon SX-40; that camera was with us and it won’t fit any pockets I have so I guess it’s safe from the type of screw-up I made with the SX-110.

Saguaro Shack

Verna drove home from the Colorado River yesterday, so I was in charge of the camera. On the road near Bouse (rhymes with house) Arizona, I took a photo of a little roadside stand where the porch had been built around a couple of saguaro cacti. Click on the image to enlarge.

At the River

Bob and I had a wonderful visit with our friends Jim and Karen when we went to their riverside home on the Colorado in Earp, CA. It’s just across the river from Parker, AZ. We had a lot of fun and met a lot of great people that live in Jim and Karen’s riverside community.

This is Karen and I walking Bear, Cabela and Bay-Bay on the shores of the river just a stone’s throw from their home. We had a lot of fun during our visit. Click on the image to enlarge.

Canyonlands National Park – 3D

canyonlands-north.pngI was browsing through some of the old vacation photos today, when I discovered an image pair that I took at Canyonlands National Park North back in July of 2008. I never got around to converting the image pair to a 3D anaglyph until today.

That day, we visited Arches National Park and both the North and South Canyonlands parks in Utah. Verna collected a vial of the red dirt from a roadside outside of the parks. We later used the vial of dirt to specify the exterior color of our Arizona Home,

You will need a pair of red/cyan or red/blue 3D glasses to view the image above. If you don’t have a pair of 3D glasses, you can see the 2D version here.

A New Camera on the Way

sx40.pngIn 2011, I had to “guess” at the rate for Federal and State withholding. It’s a long story, but in 2010, we had some unusual situations due to building a house and the finances associated therewith. So in the 2011 tax return, we got quite a large refund. We’re happy to have the money, but sad to have loaned the government interest-free cash.

I have a couple of old Canon PowerShot cameras, both of which have their shortcomings. One is beat up from several drops and the other has a malfunction in the download software. So, having looked at that, I decided to get a middle-of-the-line Canon SX40 HS 12.1MP Digital Camera with 35x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7-inch Vari-Angle Wide LCD. Verna already has the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi SLR camera which, as regular readers know, does an excellent job.

So the new camera is on the way and should be here in a few day’s time. I’m looking forward to some of the advanced features that improve on the older cameras capabilities. With some travel dates in the not-too-distant-future, I think it will work out well.

Snow Plow

snow-plow.jpgTwo years ago, we rented a motor home and took a trip over the Christmas Holidays. Our ultimate goal was to see Grand Canyon in the winter and, hopefully, with snow.

We stayed the first night in Twentynine Palms near Joshua Tree National Park. In the morning, we drove through the park toward Intestate 10 and then to Wickenburg, AZ.

When we stayed at the Horsepitality RV park in Wickenburg on Christmas Eve, we had no idea that we would have a house there in two years. We will likely be there over the Christmas weekend this year too.

On Christmas Day, we drove over to Interstate 17 to head to a campground in Flagstaff. By the time we got to the campground, there was about a foot and a half of snow on the ground.

We drove up to the Canyon the next morning. We stayed in the campground in the park and there was plenty of snow there too. As a matter of fact, we got stuck in snow for a couple of hours while we waited for Triple A to pull us out. Quite an adventure.

Other than the little mishap, the highways and roads were all quite well plowed. I took this image as we passed a southbound snowplow on US 180 as we were going northbound toward Grand Canyon. Click on the image to enlarge.
