Devil’s Tongue Cactus Flower

Cactus Flower

Our Devil’s Tongue cactus had its first open flower today. Flowers open during the Second Spring Arizona pseudo-season. I snapped this in the rock and cactus garden west of the house this morning. Several bees were busily competing for the nectar. One of them is visible in the photo.

Ferocactus latispinus is the binomial nomenclature for what is commonly called the Devil’s Tongue cactus. Wikipedia offers the following information about this cactus:

Ferocactus latispinus is a species of barrel cactus native to Mexico. It grows as a single globular light green cactus reaching the dimensions of 30 cm (12 in) in height and 40 cm (16 in) across, with 21 acute ribs. Its spines range from reddish to white in color and are flattened and reach 4 or 5 cm long. Flowering is in late autumn or early winter. The funnel-shaped flowers are purplish or yellowish and reach 4 cm long, and are followed by oval-shaped scaled fruit which reach 2.5 cm (1 in) long.

The Dog Park

The Dog Park

Now that Second Spring is upon us and cooler temperatures prevail (only 92°), we have resumed our periodic visits to the Wickenburg Dog Park. Bay Bay and Cabela were off-leash for the duration of our visit today as we walked a couple of laps around the park.

We will likely visit the dog park again when the weather permits as it likely will during the fall and winter months and into spring. As you can see from the composite photo above, we all enjoy ourselves when we visit the dog park.

Devil’s Tongue Cactus Flowers

Devil’s Tongue Cactus Flowers

When we got back from our three-week vacation, we discovered that the Devil’s Tongue Barrel Cactus was covered with flowers and buds. It is sure to put on a good show as second spring arrives in our part of Arizona.

This cactus was in a pot when we lived in California, but now it is in the ground in my rock and cactus garden. It sure seems happy to be in the Arizona Desert!

Cactus Flower Buds

Cactus Flower Buds

One of the cacti in the courtyard has developed three flower stalk buds. This will be the second spring for us to enjoy the hot pink flowers produced by this cactus. Last year, it had about nine flowers over a period of a couple of weeks.

Of course, I will post flower pictures when they open up probably in April. Click on the image to enlarge.

A tropical disturbance west of Baja California in the Eastern Pacific Ocean brought these feathery cirrus clouds over Arizona today as another low-pressure area over the pacific interacted with the tropical air aloft. Verna took this photo of the house from the driveway as we were getting ready to go shopping this afternoon. It was just another beautiful second spring day. Click on the image to enlarge.

Labor Day 2016

Labor Day Grilling’

Labor Day is here and with it come some cooler temperatures. It only got up to 97° here today and it was good weather for cookin’ on the grill. We enjoyed grilled beef tenderloin steaks (Filet Mignon), steamed broccoli and a baked sweet potato.

We are going to miss the summer, but here in our town, second spring has begun and will last until almost Thanksgiving. The mild Wickenburg winter weather attracts snowbirds from the arctic states from Labor Day until Memorial Day next year
