{"id":2214,"date":"2009-10-18T18:16:30","date_gmt":"2009-10-19T01:16:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vernabob.com\/blog\/2009\/10\/18\/casa-grande-ruins-in-3d\/"},"modified":"2009-10-18T18:16:30","modified_gmt":"2009-10-19T01:16:30","slug":"casa-grande-ruins-in-3d","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/vernabob.com\/blog\/2009\/10\/18\/casa-grande-ruins-in-3d\/","title":{"rendered":"Casa Grande Ruins in 3D"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href='http:\/\/vernabob.com\/graphics\/imageview.php?image=http:\/\/vernabob.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/casa-grade.png' title='Casa Grande Ruins'><img src='http:\/\/vernabob.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/casa-grade.thumbnail.png' alt='Casa Grande Ruins' class='right' \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Casa_Grande_Ruins_National_Monument\">Casa Grande Ruins National Monument<\/a>, in Coolidge, Arizona, just northeast of the city of Casa Grande, preserves a group of Hohokam structures.<\/p>\n<p>The national monument consists of the ruins of multiple structures surrounded by a compound wall constructed by the Hohokam, who farmed the Gila Valley in the early 1200s. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Casa Grande&#8221; is Spanish for &#8220;big house&#8221; (Siwan Wa&#8217;a Ki: in O&#8217;odham); these names refer to the largest structure on the site, which is what remains of a four story structure that may have been abandoned by the mid-1400s. The structure is made of caliche, and has managed to survive the extreme weather conditions for about seven centuries. Graffiti from 19th-century passers-by is scratched into its walls; though this is now illegal. Casa Grande now has a distinctive modern roof covering built in 1932.<\/p>\n<p>Click on the image to enlarge.
