When I went out on the patio an hour after I took the photo this afternoon, the flowers were all wilted. Given such a short open period, it&#8217;s a good thing I managed to capture this photo today.<\/p>\n<p>Click on the image to enlarge.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Echinopsis\">Wikipedia<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Echinopsis is a large genus of cacti native to South America, sometimes known as <strong>hedgehog<\/strong>, <strong>sea-urchin<\/strong> or <strong>Easter lily<\/strong> cactus. One small species, E. chamaecereus, is known as the <a href=\"http:\/\/capnbob.us\/blog\/2010\/04\/23\/peanut-cactus-flower\/\">peanut cactus<\/a>. The 128 species range from large and treelike types to small globose cacti. The name derives from echinos hedgehog or sea urchin, and opsis appearance, a reference to these plants&#8217; dense coverings of spines.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This particular variety of echinopsis only grows to a height of six inches (15 cm).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three Echinopsis cactus flowers probably appeared in the wee hours during the night.
