A Double Topknot Quail

Double Topknot Quail

We saw this unusual quail on the courtyard wall. The curious thing is that Gambel’s quail generally have only a single topknot feather. This guy has two. I bet he gets a lot of dates with the hens with his “special” attribute. Click on the image to enlarge.

Alert Dogs

Alert Dogs

Even on rainy days, Cabela and I keep watch out the front window. We bark if we see something that doesn’t belong there. We sometimes bark when there is something that does belong there. Click on the image to make us big.

Gymnocalycium Friederichii Flower

Gymnocalycium Friederichii Flower

It’s quite a mouthful to pronounce the name of this little flower, but it is accurate, it seems (jim-no-cal-LEE-see-um freed-er-EEK-ee-eye). I purchased the tiny barrel cactus with the big name that produces these flowers at a cactus and succulent show in California a few years ago. The parent barrel is no longer producing flowers, but it grew a satellite barrel that produced this one today. Click on the image to enlarge.

Desert Still Life

Desert Stuff

I took this photo of a golden barrel cactus and some dead cactus wood yesterday after shopping. We were about a quarter mile north of our house and this was beside the road. I thought it would make an interesting desert still life. Click on the image to enlarge.

Creosote and Compass Barrel Cactus

Compass Barrel Cactus

We have landscape plants around the house and courtyard and along the RV drive, but, once you go up the hill behind, it is all natural desert flora and fauna. This compass barrel cactus is about halfway between the RV drive and the north property line. We both love the natural desert in our back yard. Click on the image to enlarge.
