Vacation

Hopi House 3D Image

hopi-house.jpgI’m still going through some of the images from our summer vacation. I took a number of panoramas and ‘pairs’ to be merged into 3D anaglyph red-cyan pictures. I have shown a number of panoramas but this is the first summer vacation 3D picture to get posted.

This is the result of a pair I took of the ‘Hopi House,’ one of the five Mary Jane Colter buildings at Grand Canyon. The Hopi House is located at Grand Canyon Village near the famous Bright Angel (another Colter building) and the El Tovar Lodges. Click for the larger ‘PNG’ (better resolution) image.

You will need 3D glasses to view the image and the PNG above. If you don’t have the 3D glasses handy, you can see the 2D version here.

Canyon of Death

“Canyon de Muerto,” so named by the Spaniards after on-going conflicts with the Navajo Tribes who once lived here. The Spaniards are gone, but the Díné still dwell in these canyons. Many of the proud Tribe reject the name Navajo since that is the name given to them by the invading Spaniards.

In this panorama, Verna looks down into the canyon, whose floor is a thousand feet down. Click the thumbnail image below to enlarge.

Bright Angel Canyon

bright-angel-canyon.jpg

This is Bright Angel Canyon, as seen from Mather Point, on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Bright Angel extends from the Colorado River to the north and is in the center of this photo. Bright Angel Creek empties into the river straight ahead and down, out of view.

On the right side of Bright Angel, you can see Sumner Butte near the mouth of the canyon, with the higher formations of Brahma Temple and Diva Temple behind and further to the right. On the left side, you can see Sturdevant Point and Johnson Point, with Hiller’s Butte and Buddha Temple to the left of them, all beyond Phantom Creek which empties into Bright Angel Creek on the left.

At the top of Bright Angel Canyon is Bright Angel Spring near the village at the North Rim, about 13 miles away. Visitors to the North Rim get this view from the other end.

This is one of the most beautiful sights in the world. Click on the image for a closer look.

Avalon Harbor at Night

I can’t take credit for this photo of the Harbor in Avalon, Catalina Island. I captured the image from the Catalina Island Webcams page. This view is from the perspective of the Casino looking back into town. Be sure to click the Casino link for a photo of the Casino at night that I took during our visit.

Awestruck

Verna snapped this photo of me gaping into the Cañon del Muerte near Chinle, AZ. last summer. It was my 65th birthday, and I was really enjoying a beautiful day and awesome scenery in Northeastern Arizona.

Our Favorite Hotel Room

We have mentioned before on our blog that we try to book the same hotel room when we go to Avalon for our anniversary. This is a photo of the actual room. We spent our wedding night here and several of the anniversaries too. A feature not shown in this view off-camera to the right is a lovely whirlpool Jacuzzi tub-for-two. This year, the room had a face lift from shabby-chic to this modern style.

I threw a little Flash™ code together to get this image to pan back and forth.
