Planting the New Cactus

A week ago we bought a cereus cactus and brought it home. Today, we finally got it in the ground in front of the house. We are really looking forward to seeing the flowers bloom. Click on the blue play button for a slideshow of getting it into the ground.

Cholla Cactus Buds

We don’t actually have these cacti in our garden, but there are a couple of them near the RV pull through road and many more on the west and north sides of the property. You can see that they have formidable needles and that when the flowers open, you might not want to try and smell them. Click on the image to enlarge.

Kissing Cardinals

Here is a cardinal couple on the seed bell in the mesquite tree behind the RV pull-through. They appear to be smooching in this picture but in reality, they are merely sharing snacks on the bell. Click on the image to enlarge.

View to the Northeast

Verna took this photo from the hilltop a couple of blocks up the road. It’s a view of the Hassayampa Valley to the northeast and the mountains beyond. The Hassayampa River originates in the mountains and flows underground for miles before flowing on the surface through this area.

I cropped Verna’s photo down to create a panorama. Click on the image to view the full-sized panorama.
