The Town’s Namesake

Bust of Henry Wickenburg

We happened to be over in the downtown area today, to do a little shopping. As we passed the Town Center, I snapped this photo of the bust of gold miner Henry Wickenburg for whom the town was named. This bust is in front of Town Hall.

From Wikipedia:

In 1862 a gold strike on the Colorado River near present-day Yuma brought American prospectors, who searched for minerals throughout central Arizona. Many of the geographic landmarks now bear the names of these pioneers, including the Weaver Mountains, named after mountain man Pauline Weaver, and Peeples Valley, named after a settler.

An Austrian named Henry Wickenburg was one of the first prospectors. His efforts were rewarded with the discovery of the Vulture Mine, from which more than $30 million worth of gold has been dug.

Late Bloomers

Late Bloomers

We were taken by surprise this morning, when we saw another flower on our big saguaro. There were many flowers in late May and early June and we thought they were done.

There are also a couple of new small flower buds that promise to bring more flowers soon. We love spring and summer in the desert! Click on the image to enlarge.

Lemons – Lots of ‘Em

Lemons

Our lemon tree has been doing great this year. I trimmed it this spring and it already needs to be trimmed back more. I took this photo today of some of the lemons just at the top of the tree. There are many, many lemons and we will be harvesting them in the near future.

We are planning to use the lemon skins to produce Limoncello, an Italian liqueur (digestivo). We will take the pulp and squeeze the juice out to keep for future use as ingredients to meals or as lemonade. We’re looking into how to preserve lemon juice over the long term. Saguaro, Saguaro, I Love You Saguaro

First Saguaros

You’re only a state away . . . (apologies to ‘Annie‘).

After getting back in the Copper State crossing the Colorado River coming from California, it is only a short time before we see the first saguaros growing on the hillsides. I’m not saying there are NO saguaros in California, only that they do not populate the hillsides with hundreds of them like after the river crossing into Arizona. We enjoy seeing them after we cross the river all the way across the Arizona Outback and all the way to home. Click on the image to enlarge.

Golden Barrel Cactus Flower

Golden Barrel Cactus Flower

It’s almost summer and time for some of the barrel cactus flowers to start to open. This is the golden barrel cactus that I have in my rock and cactus garden on the west side of the property. We are still expecting more flowers from several barrel cacti that are here – some we planted and some were here when we came. Click on the image to enlarge.

Vigilant

Vigilant

Bay Bay and Cabela stand watch in their usual position on the top of the love seat. If anyone or anything is on the road out front, they will let us know. Fortunately, neither of them bark at birds other than the roadrunner that comes around once in a while. Click on the image to enlarge.
