Beaver Tail Cactus in 3D

beavertail3d.pngI took a pair of images of a ‘beaver tail’ cactus in bloom during our recent visit to Joshua Tree National Park. The bright pink flowers on this type of cactus are frequently seen in the park during late spring. You can click on the image for the full-sized anaglyph image.

When I image scenes that contain bright reddish or bright bluish colors, the image, when viewed through the 3D glasses will look different to each of the eyes. This gives an unnatural feeling when you look at the image. Compare the image above to this grayscale 3D image here. The problem with that, is the bright pink flowers appear as a dull shade of gray.

And, as usual, if you do not have your free pair of 3D glasses, you can see the 2D image here. For more 3D images click here or here.

A Zany Scorpion Sculpture in 3D

scorpion.pngOur recent trip to Arizona included a stop at the Phoenix Convention Center. We were attending the annual National Rifle Association convention and gun show. On our way into the exhibit hall, we passed several zany insect sculptures in the plaza just outside.

I paused by the scorpion and took the image pair to create this anaglyph.

According to the Convention Center website:

“Social Invertebrates,” Tom Otterness – Three large, whimsical bronze sculptures of desert creatures, enlarged to human scale. The creatures include a millipede with a hat and shoes; a walking stick in high heels, and a scorpion holding two small men in top hats tugging at a bag of money. Accompanying sculptural elements of people, scaled down to Lilliputian dimensions, interact with the creatures. The sculptures are set in a unique water-harvesting garden at the public plaza located near the southeast entrance of the North Building.

Cruiser in 3D

3D CruiserLast year during our Winter Cruise, I took a 3D picture of the RV parked in one of the campgrounds where we spent the night. I took another set of images and composed this image in the campground in Phoenix where we spent three nights last week.

I got up early one morning to walk Bear, and paused to take the pictures while the sun was still low in the sky. The temperature was (only) 85°, on the way up to 100° or so. Inside the RV, however, it was a comfortable temperature since there is an air conditioner on top that keeps the inside cool when we’re plugged in to the campground electrical hookup, unlike last winter when we ran the propane furnace in the RV to keep warm.

As usual, you can click the image to see it full-sized in the viewer, and for those who do not have the requisite 3D glasses, you can see the 2D version here.

Three Dimensional

Three DimensionalPerhaps this post ought to be classified “Verna’s 3D Stuff.”

Last week, Verna drove to Santa Monica for her dental check-up and cleaning appointment. Since the dentist’s office is about 25 miles from home, she left early in order to get there on time. As it turned out, the traffic was a bit lighter than usual and she arrived about 55 minutes early for the appointment.

With a little time to kill, she grabbed her camera and walked towards Palisades Park to take advantage of the photo ops she knew would be there. Well, she did get a number of interesting images – too numerous to show here – but this one pair of images stood out to me.

She was on Ocean Avenue, in front of Dimensional Fund Advisors‘ Santa Monica offices and it occurred to her that their ‘Dimensional’ logo could be a play on the words ‘three dimensional,’ like the photos I often post here. She aligned herself in front of the sign and took the pair of images, one left and one right. The image seen here is the result of converting her pictures to an anaglyph, or red-cyan 3D image.

Garden Archway 3D Image

Garden of the SensesI took this 3D picture from inside the rose garden looking toward the “Garden of the Senses.” The arch forms the western portal to the rose garden at the South Coast Botanic Gardens.

We were there for a visit to see all the beautiful spring flowers. Verna takes most of the pictures of the flowers, while I’m in charge of nerdy panoramas and 3D pictures.

Lizard in 3D

California Brown LizardI took this 3D image of a small brown lizard on our recent visit to the Botanic Gardens. I found it perched on a chunk of dried out wood in the cactus and succulents garden. It posed long enough for me to take the pair of images necessary for the 3D effect. Click on the image to enlarge.

I was surprised at the number and variety of lizards on the USGS web page that are indigenous to the California Coastal area. This one is likely a ‘small scaled lizard,’ commonly found in both southern California and Baja.
