Pelicans at Point Vicente

On a whim, we drove over the Palos Verdes Peninsula today to Point Vicente. We thought that it might be a picturesque day and we were not disappointed.

It was a spectacular day, with azure skies, puffy white clouds, blue pacific waters and flocks of California Brown Pelicans soaring the updrafts along the cliffs on the south side of the peninsula. I captured this picture of some Browns rounding the point by the whale watching center. The Point Vicente Lighthouse is in the background with Santa Catalina Island in the distance. Vincent Thomas Bridge

Vincent Thomas BridgeSunday, we took a scenic drive down to San Pedro. It was a blustery day and we wanted to see the ocean and the waves. Entering the area, you can see the Vincent Thomas Bridge. I took this photo (click to enlarge) just before we exited to Harbor Drive.

We didn’t drive over the bridge this time, but we have many times in the past on our way to Long Beach and beyond.

For most of my life, I remember the bridge being there. Bob, on the other hand, remembers taking the Terminal Island Ferry from the Long Beach side with his folks before the bridge was built.

Weekends on the Backyard Swing

on the swingMuch of the winter and early spring the weather and our recently busy schedule have kept us off of the backyard swing. Now, as milder weather approaches, we’re spending more time relaxing on the swing. I usually bring the laptop computer to the swing and Verna often brings out her favorite reading material. I recently ordered a 9-inch notebook computer for Verna, so she can use it when we head out to the swing.

UPDATE: This Arrived Today!!

Verna’s Coup d’ Grâce

We have a lot of fun when we go to the shooting range. Today, Verna was shooting at a silhouette target with her 20 gauge Remington 870. She gets such a kick out of demolishing the last hanging vestige of the target.

Looking Into Grand Canyon – 3D

canyon-floor.pngThe purpose of this 3D photograph is to attempt to impart to the viewer, a feeling of looking downward into the canyon from the rim. You can see the downhill layers of rock progressively appearing deeper and deeper, with the canyon floor far in the background depths below.

Click on the image to the right to view the full-sized anaglyph.

I shot the stereo pair used to create this image during our summer 2008 trip to the Grand Canyon. I shot quite a few stereo pairs during that trip, and just now getting around to producing these 3D images.

As always, if you don’t happen to have a pair of 3D glasses, you can view the 2D version here, but this version doesn’t even begin to impart the depth found in the 3D version.

Pelicans Over the Point

This photo of a flock of California Brown Pelicans is from last October 11th. I took it from the LA County Fishing Access on Palos Verdes Drive South. The birds are soaring toward Point Vicente, a few hundred yards in the distance. Click on the image below for a 1024×768 enlargement.
