New Cymbidium Orchid

new-cymbidiumI saw this orange cymbidium orchid at the Botanic Gardens plant sale on Saturday, and thought it was very nice. Since it was one of the first things to be seen inside the courtyard as we entered the show and sale, I put it aside and we went to look at the rest of the exhibits in the courtyard and showroom.

After cruising the exhibits a bit, Verna bought an interesting succulent for the front flowerbed (more on that later). We went out into the garden area and took a very long walk through the volunteer garden, past the cactus patch and all the way to the lake (more on that later as well).

On our way back from the lake, I couldn’t stop thinking about the orange cymbidium, and so I decided to buy it. It already has the beautiful flowers shown, and numerous stalks and pods that promise that we should have more of these in a while. Verna took this picture after we got it home and in the patio. Restless Sea

We went down to the Palos Verdes Peninsula today to have a look at the surf being kicked up by the blustery winds. We were not disappointed.

Succulent Symmetry

Just a few steps away from the orchid show we went to over the weekend, is the botanic gardens. One of our favorite sections is the cactus and succulent garden. You will find many strange and beautiful varieties such as this beautifully symmetrical member of the agavaceae family, which is closely related to yucca, aloe and agave. Another New Shooter – A Digital Camera

canon-xti.gifIn a few days, I am getting a brand-new Canon Digital Rebel XTi camera. My current camera, a Digital Rebel 300D, is still a great camera and takes beautiful pictures. I’m not exactly going to retire it, but likely it will be in my camera bag as a standby camera (like with a telephoto or wide-angle lens). All my old lenses will work with the new camera. The old camera can be at the ready should I need it during the next air show or vacation or whatever.

I’m so excited. I’ll be here on Monday.

Here is an excerpt from a review at Digital Photography Review:

Almost exactly three years since Canon changed the digital SLR market forever (with the $1,000 EOS 300D) they announced the third generation of their affordable entry level series, the EOS 400D (Digital Rebel XTi). This new camera follows the design of the EOS 350D, being very compact and relatively lightweight but not compromising on manual controls or in-use performance. The headline changes are another two megapixel step up (to ten megapixels), the nine-point AF sensor from the EOS 30D, a new dust removal system which includes anti-static surface coatings, low-pass filter vibration and software based dust pattern removal. Less important but just as noticeable are the removal of the status LCD, replaced instead by a camera settings screen on the now larger 2.5″ LCD monitor and the eye proximity sensor just below the viewfinder to turn this off when composing your shot.

After the Rain

vicente.jpgWe did a little shopping this morning after the overnight rain. We got some sports equipment at Big 5 and some gun cleaning and target practice supplies at Turner’s Outdoorsman. Having nothing else to do and since it was early, we decided to head down to the Palos Verdes Peninsula. it was certain to be clear after the rainfall. We weren’t disappointed – we had crystal clear views of Santa Catalina Island and all the way out to Santa Barbara Island. We posed for this picture at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center with the lighthouse in the background. Click for the full-sized picture.

Catalina WebCams

A couple of companies on Catalina Island feature web cameras on their internet sites. These folks have made the code available to display the webcam images on our pages, so I have added a new feature, Catalina Island WebCams under the Potpourri menu in the left sidebar. That page offers previews of the webcams in a small window. For the full-sized webcams, check out this larger view. The picture below is an image captured after dark last weekend. You can see the Hotel Metropole (our favorite place to stay there) just to the left of and above the arch next to the Tuna Club in the center of the picture. We’ll be staying there again this fall for our wedding anniversary.
