An Early Summer BBQ Day

The last couple of days have been quite warm in the South Bay. With such summer-like conditions, who could resist a Barbecue? We went to work with BBQ baby back pork ribs, grilled pineapple, grilled asparagus, roasted corn on the cob and steamed broccoli and cauliflower. We ate out in the patio while the hummingbirds put on a show feeding from the flowers in the yard. What a good day!

Rainbow Harbor

While I lived in Long Beach as a child, my parents would often take us kids to the shoreline. At the time, there was a semicircular pier called ‘Rainbow Pier’ in the harbor. Today, the pier is gone and the harbor there is now ‘Rainbow Harbor.’ This is a panoramic view of the harbor taken from Pierpoint Landing where Dad used to take us fishing. Seashore

We hoped that after last week’s rainfall, that it would be clear enough for some good photo ops at the seashore. Unfortunately, we had one of those mostly overcast weekends with suboptimal visibility. So, I dug into the archives and found this nice seascape taken at Point Vicente several weeks ago. Verna takes most of the pretty pictures for the blog, but every once in a while I get lucky and get a good shot with my canon A710IS digital camera. This is a wallpaper-sized photo. Devil’s Tongue

Verna took this photo of our Devil’s Tongue barrel cactus in the back yard today. I couldn’t help but notice the patterns of the ribs and spines – they fit in with the mathematical topic of a post I wrote on the other blog about the Fibonacci series called Spiral Seashell. The number of ribs on the cactus and the direction and twists of the spines are all related to Fibonacci numbers. When the blooms come this summer, I’ll try and get a picture of the patterns on the flowers too.

Busy Easter Sunday

We did lots of things this weekend. We still found time to go to target practice though. This is a still frame from a video I took while Verna was shooting the .357 magnum revolver. There were some big muzzle plumes, including this rather spectacular one.
