Another Fierce Rain

This one isn’t as bad as the record-breaker of July 18, 2015, but it deposited quite a lot of rainfall. Panning from right to left above, you can see (through the patio screen) the waterfall on the hill behind the wall, fierce rain falling on the RV drive and the rain gutter overflow from the roof.

The retention walls did their jobs though, keeping us dry inside and diverting wash runoff down the road via the west wash path. The capital investment in walls and pavement have paid off this season 100 percent.

What’s For Dinner?

Grilled Tenderloin Steak

We returned from the California trip to see the new grandbaby on Sunday, which would normally be a cooking day, so all we had on that day was some leftover bean soup. It was a hearty soup, though, and more than adequate for our Sunday meal.

One of the nice things about retirement is that you have a week full of virtual Saturdays to do whatever the hell you want, so today, I pulled the grill to the back of the patio and grilled up a couple of petite beef tenderloin steaks. Verna had some leftover Broccoli Mac’n’Cheese in the freezer, a can of green peas and some Romaine lettuce for a Cesar salad on the side.

This Monday meal was as good as any Sunday cooking day could have been. Click on the image to enlarge.

One Happy Grandma and a Beautiful New Baby

One Happy Grandma

We got home today from the road trip to California to see the new baby. Grandma Verna is still floating around with the happiness as a result of having a new grandson.

Quoting her, “He’s so soft, long fingers and toes, perfect in every way!” Baby G is still very little, but in perfect health and will be gaining weight every day since he is now nursing very well.

“I just love him – I told him so and he seemed to smile back at me when I did.” Click on the image to enlarge.

Baby G Video

Grandma Verna got to hold our new grandson today. He is the cutest little thing. This video shows him working real hard to pass his last meal of milk that Verna fed to him just before.

He is small, still just over five pounds, but perfect in every way. He has a nice round head, long fingers and toes, is gaining weight and, of course, pooping and peeing his fair share. We hated to say goodbye for now when we headed back to our campsite.

The other set of Grandparents told us that the new little guy will be visiting them often and said we’re welcome to come here whenever he’s in town. We will probably be back in September when we are planning to take our next California trip.

Planet Pluto in 3D

Planet Pluto in 3D

Astronomy Picture of the Day posted a stereo card (like for old-time stereoscopes) of the planet Pluto as seen by the New Horizons mission spacecraft. I took the stereo card image and combined the left and right-eye images into the anaglyph (red-cyan) image above.

This is the original text from APOD:

Explanation: These two detailed, true color images of Pluto were captured during the historic New Horizons flyby last month. With slightly different perspectives on the now recognizeable surface features they are presented in this first high quality stereo pair intended for viewing by denizens of planet Earth. The left hand image (left eye) is a mosaic recorded when the spacecraft was about 450,000 kilometers from Pluto. The right single image was acquired earlier, a last full look before the spacecraft’s closest approach. Despite a difference in resolution, the pair combine for a stunning 3D perception of the distant, underworldly terrain.

You will need your free pair of 3D glasses to view the image (click image to enlarge). If you don’t have a pair, I have posted the original stereo card here.

Queen of the Morning

Queen of the Morning

The Arizona Queen of the Night Cactus on the east side of our house had two open flowers last night. If you catch them early enough the morning after, these flowers are still quite beautiful before they fade away in the sunlight.

Last evening was good for night-blooming cacti in the area; the flowers above (two of them) opened east of the house and the Argentine Giant had three flowers still open this morning. It’s a one-night-stand with both of these flower types. Click on the image to enlarge.
