Peacock Sighting at Mom and Dad’s House
My sister, Carol, heard what she described as an animal sound coming from behind the garage the other day. I asked what it sounded like – she imitated what I thought sounded like an elephant. She also said that she could hear something in a tree out there. Elephants in trees? Probably not.
Since she didn’t want to go out there, I decided to venture out to see what this mystery beast was all about. Imagine my surprise when I saw this peacock strutting across the top of one of the neighbor’s travel trailer just across the fence from the back part of the yard.
It was a beautiful bird, one of the prettiest I’ve seen, although it’s tail feathers were kind of mucked up like something ‘almost’ caught it one time. And it moved quite quickly too. It just wouldn’t pose for me, as I tried to get a picture.

Update: BB took a picture of the peacock later in the day:

More Old Pictures
I started rummaging around in the electronic files for something unrelated and found this one that I scanned in a long time ago. This was our family in late 1944. Mom, Dad and my brother, Bill, were standing on Fifth Street, near Locust Avenue in Long Beach, CA. Mom is holding me at age 1 plus something. Behind us is the First Christian Church, which has since been demolished and is now a shopping mall.
Dad was home on leave from WWII which was still in progress. He is wearing the uniform of a Warrant Officer in the US Navy. I wrote about some of Dad’s WWII service in another post a while back.

Mom’s 89th Birthday
Happy birthday to my Mother, Kate.
Kate was born on April 23, 1920 and grew up in San Pedro and Long Beach, CA. She married my Dad in December 1938. Her children were born in 1941 (Bill), 1943 (that would be me), 1946 (Jim) and 1954 (Krystal). She has numerous grand kids and great-grand kids.
Mom currently lives in the foothills near the Sunland/Tujunga area.
Happy Birthday Mom – We love you!
Drake
I took this photo of my nephew, Drake, at Mom’s the other day. Carol and BB, my sisters, brought Drake to visit Mom and Dad. Drake, who is almost two years old, was helping me while I watered some of Mom’s plants. He would dip a cup into the water bucket and carry it to a plant that needed water. Of course, in this picture, he is wearing one of ‘Papa’s’ white shirts because not all of the water went into the pots.
Ain’t he just the cutest little thing? I just want to pinch his little cheeks! Click the image for a closer look.
We’ve posted pix of Drake here before:

Doggie Direction Finder
I set up a couple of webcams at home so I can remotely monitor what’s going on in the house. I also like to see what Verna is up to – between the chatroom and the webcam, she virtually keeps me company when she’s at the computer and when I’m at my desk.
Today, when she returned from visiting Mom and Dad, she let Bear in and was puttering about getting ready to get back to the computer. Although you can’t see Verna in any of these frames, you know in which direction she is off camera, thanks to our Doggie Direction Finder (DDF)
In the top frame, the DDF is detecting Verna to be in the vicinity of the little fridge or the little TV. In the second frame, the DDF indicates that she is in the living room or dining room. Finally, in the bottom frame, the DDF locates her in the kitchen.
Maybe I can get the DDF patented . . .
