Disappearing High Tension Lines

Not far from where I work, there is a golf course and a tennis club. In the bad old days, these both were just a cleared out area where the power lines and their unsightly towers ran through on their way from the electric power plants in El Segundo and Playa del Rey on the way to distribution points east.

Planners decided at some point that the wires were not a desirable feature and found a way to run these high wires underground. I took this panorama from the east end of the subterranean power line run to the west end where the towers resume. You can see the lines disappearing as they plunge into the ground at the near end. The golf course is directly behind the tree line along the street running from left to right. I circled the west tower where the lines come back up about a half mile in the distance on the far right end.

I sometimes walk down to this end of the run from the building where I work, which is at the far end of the run in this picture. About a mile round trip and a good after lunch walk.

I Beg Your Pardon

I never promised you a rose garden – but here it is in panoramic wide screen. Click the image for the full-sized view of the Rose Garden in the South Coast Botanic Gardens.

Riverside at London Bridge

Well, not actually riverside – it’s a section of a canal that McCulloch and company dug through a peninsula on Lake Havasu. The bridge spans the canal at Queen’s Village and is the only thoroughfare from the ‘mainland’ to the ‘island’ peninsula. It was 113 degrees when I strolled down to the water to take this panoramic view. Click on the image below for the full-sized panorama.

Cameron Trading Post

Most years we travel in Arizona, we stay at the Cameron Trading Post. It’s a complex on the Navajo Reservation near the east entrance to Grand Canyon. Rooms are reasonable and they have a great gift shop, restaurant and a very nice garden. This is the panoramic view from the room we stayed in overlooking the little Colorado River gorge. Later this night, we saw an amazing light show, courtesy of the electrical storms north of us. Click for full-sized panorama.

Hoodoo Panorama

This is one of many panoramic images I took on our vacation last week. This is at Bryce Canyon from Sunrise Point. Just look at the colors and weird hoodoo formations. Amazing.

The Colorado River at Laughlin, NV

Our travels took us to Laughlin Nevada today, where I imaged this panoramic view of the Colorado River. Left to right are the Laughlin Bullhead City bridge, the river with north Bullhead on the opposite bank and finally downstream to Don Laughlin’s Riverside Hotel and Casino – now slightly larger than the original single story complex.
