Looking Into Grand Canyon – 3D

canyon-floor.pngThe purpose of this 3D photograph is to attempt to impart to the viewer, a feeling of looking downward into the canyon from the rim. You can see the downhill layers of rock progressively appearing deeper and deeper, with the canyon floor far in the background depths below.

I shot the stereo pair used to create this image during our summer 2008 trip to the Grand Canyon. I shot quite a few stereo pairs during that trip, and just now getting around to producing these 3D images.

As always, if you don’t happen to have a pair of 3D glasses, you can view the 2D version here, but this version doesn’t even begin to impart the depth found in the 3D version.

Kingman Express

kingman-express.pngIsn’t this a magnificent locomotive? This beauty is located in Kingman, AZ, on Route 66. Verna and I stopped there in December while we were on our winter RV cruise. I stood about twenty feet away from the locomotive and snapped a pair of images to merge into this nice 3D picture. Click on the image to see the full-sized 3D picture.

The travel attractions website What-Where dot Info has this description of Kingman’s Locomotive Park.

Across the road from the old Powerhouse, famed steam locomotive #3759 awaits your inspection. Designed as a coal burning engine, it was converted to burn oil in 1941. It was the last of the big steam engines to traverse the Santa Fe line to Kingman. It was finally taken out of service and presented to the city in 1957. Old #3759 was joined by a brightly decorated caboose in 1987.

You will need a pair of 3D glasses to view the stereo image. If you don’t have your pair yet, you can see the large 2D image here.

Canyon del Muerto – 3D

canyon-muerto.pngCanyon de Chelly National Monument was established April 1, 1931, as a unit of the National Park Service and is located in northeastern Arizona within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation. The monument covers 131 square miles (339 km2) and encompasses the floors and rims of the three major canyons: de Chelly, del Muerto, and Monument. These canyons were cut by streams with headwaters in the Chuska mountains just to the east of the monument.

This image comes from a pair of images I took last July 22nd during our visit to the del Muerto side of Canyon de Chelly. Click on the image above to see a larger version. If you don’t have your 3D glasses handy you can see a version of Canyon del Muerto in 2D by clicking on the link.

Winter Canyon from Lookout Studio

Here is one of the photos Verna took the morning we were at the Grand Canyon Village. This is looking northeast near Bright Angel Trail Head. The icicles are hanging from the famous Lookout Studio near Bright Angel Lodge.

Lookout Studio Icicles and Grand Canyon

I was at the dentist this morning and I told my hygienist to check out our blog for some pictures we took at Grand Canyon on our Winter Cruise. Then, I realized that this photo (one of the prettiest) wasn’t posted on this weblog. Better late than never.

Death Valley Ranch House in 3D

ranch-houseWhen we went through Death Valley on our Winter Vacation, we went to Scotty’s Castle, which is a must see attraction there. The castle is only a part of the greater ranch that ‘Scotty’ actually did not build.

It actually belonged to and was built by Albert Johnson. This desert mansion, begun in 1922, was where Johnson’s family entertained many guests. The castle is a blend of Moorish, Spanish, Italian and California Mission architecture. Death Valley Scotty was the caretaker of the castle.

I formed this image (click on it for the full size) from a pair of photos shot near the clock tower on the ranch. If you don’t have your free pair of 3D glasses yet, here is the link to the two-dimensional version.

A Cool 1956 Buick Roadmaster

At least I think it’s that year and model, from what I could see when we drove past it in Williams, Arizona. We stopped there to get groceries and fuel during our winter vacation. Verna snapped this picture on our way through town.

Williams is a really nice little town along Interstate 40’s high country, just an hour south of the Grand Canyon. It snowed for four days straight prior to our trip through town. This Roadmaster is a really cool car, don’t ya think? Click on the image to enlarge.
