Point Vicente Fishing Access Panorama

I only found out today that the City of Rancho Palos Verdes now owns and maintains the Point Vicente Fishing Access property off of Palos Verdes Drive South. The City acquired this property from Los Angeles County through a grant deed in May 2004. This 10.5-acre site features a paved parking lot, a restroom building, an improved trail to the shoreline, and incredible Catalina and ocean views.

We were up there a couple of months ago when the air was particularly clear. I took six images and stitched them together to make the panoramic image. Click on the thumbnail panorama to see full sized. Scroll to the right for Catalina Island and some vessels in the channel.

Verna’s Little Shooter

Yesterday we went to the shooting range. I made several videos of us shooting. I liked this one of Verna shooting her little Smith and Wesson 442 J-frame .38 caliber revolver because of the big muzzle flashes from such a small (but powerful) firearm.

Kabocha Squash

kabocha.jpgWe thought that we had planted Acorn Squash when, in fact, they turned out to be Kabocha Squash (Japanese Pumpkin). After we saw some in the produce department of the local supermarket, I looked them up on Wikipedia. Today many of the kabocha in the market are of the type called Kuri kabocha, which was created based on Seiyo kabocha (buttercup squash). It’s popular for its strong yet sweet flavor.

It’s a good thing I looked them up on line because there are certain procedures that must be followed after harvesting them. First, they need to ripen in warm temperature for a couple of weeks and then they need to be stored in a cool dry place for about a month to increase the carbohydrate content. In this way the just-harvested, dry, bland-tasting kabocha is transformed into smooth, sweet kabocha.

I guess we’ll be trying Kabocha Squash later this summer. Click on the image to enlarge.

Up To The Minute Weather

Verna and I drove to the dentist this morning. On the way back, she took this interesting photo of an “Up to the Minute Weather” station. Click on the image to enlarge.
