Good Visibility Indicator

isthmus-mainland.jpgVerna and I like to visit the area around Point Vicente, especially when the visibility is good. We like to look across the channel towards Catalina Island and up and down the coastline when you can actually see them.

A quick way to check whether the visibility is good enough, is to visit the Catalina Two Harbors Webcam. On the sidebar next to the image of the harbor there is a list of points to zoom on. I clicked on the “Ship Rock” zoom select to get the image on the right. In this image, not only can you see the Palos Verdes Peninsula on the mainland, but you can also see the mountains beyond. Crock Pot Roast

pot-roast.jpgThis morning we got up and spent a few moments in the kitchen chopping veggies and getting a three-pound beef tenderloin roast ready for the crock pot. We turned it on and let it go all day until time to get the roast out to rest and make the gravy.

Bottom line: this was an AWESOME way to prepare a medium-sized beef roast. The roast, itself, was cooked to perfection, virtually falling apart as I carved servings out of it. The vegetables were tender and flavorful and Verna’s gravy was the best in the world.

I am the luckiest man on the planet. Click on the split image above to see the roast before and after the crock pot treatment.

Rainy Weekend

rain-pan.jpg

Wow. It poured a couple of times today. We have a little flooding on the patio, so when the Princess has to go out, we use the front lawn. I had the umbrella, but the rain didn’t seem to bother her – which is strange ’cause she hates water.

Anyhow, I made a panoramic image of the street as a wave of showers was passing through. Click on the image above to see the full-sized panorama.

Given the nasty weather, it’s a good thing we’re having comfort food later.

Street in Old Town Torrance

Every once in a while, Verna will capture a pair of images that I can merge into a three dimensional anaglyph image. This is one of those.

We were driving to a doctor appointment this morning and our route took us through old town Torrance. Verna took a pair of images out of the the truck window. The motion of the truck gave the images the perspective shift necessary for depth perception.

Garden Shop Gears Up for Christmas

On our bi-weekly trip to the garden shop today, the theme was obviously Christmas. I cannot recall seeing so many poinsettias in a single place in my life. Verna got this candid shot of the overwhelming poinsettia invasion. Click to enlarge.

The weird thing is that the vendors had painted and glitterized some of the plants. I wonder just how long something like that will last? Some were gold, some were purple (weird) and some were green and yellow (also weird). I just like the red and yellow ones, like God intended.

Adult Migratory Locust

locust.jpgI looked out the front door this morning and I saw this large bug just sitting on the sidewalk sunning itself. I called to Verna to bring her camera. When she did, the bug patiently posed for her to take several shots, including this one (click to enlarge).

I did not know exactly what kind of a bug was sunning on our walkway (it was still there when we closed the front door). I went into the house and looked up ‘locust’ using an image search. I quickly found one that looked a lot like our bug and went to the website that had the picture. The bug was an adult migratory locust according to an Australian insect pest photo gallery.

This guy was a long way from Australia . . .
