Three Dimensional
Perhaps this post ought to be classified “Verna’s 3D Stuff.”
Last week, Verna drove to Santa Monica for her dental check-up and cleaning appointment. Since the dentist’s office is about 25 miles from home, she left early in order to get there on time. As it turned out, the traffic was a bit lighter than usual and she arrived about 55 minutes early for the appointment.
With a little time to kill, she grabbed her camera and walked towards Palisades Park to take advantage of the photo ops she knew would be there. Well, she did get a number of interesting images – too numerous to show here – but this one pair of images stood out to me.
She was on Ocean Avenue, in front of Dimensional Fund Advisors‘ Santa Monica offices and it occurred to her that their ‘Dimensional’ logo could be a play on the words ‘three dimensional,’ like the photos I often post here. She aligned herself in front of the sign and took the pair of images, one left and one right. The image seen here is the result of converting her pictures to an anaglyph, or red-cyan 3D image.

More Old Pictures
I started rummaging around in the electronic files for something unrelated and found this one that I scanned in a long time ago. This was our family in late 1944. Mom, Dad and my brother, Bill, were standing on Fifth Street, near Locust Avenue in Long Beach, CA. Mom is holding me at age 1 plus something. Behind us is the First Christian Church, which has since been demolished and is now a shopping mall.
Dad was home on leave from WWII which was still in progress. He is wearing the uniform of a Warrant Officer in the US Navy. I wrote about some of Dad’s WWII service in another post a while back.

Garden Archway 3D Image
I took this 3D picture from inside the rose garden looking toward the “Garden of the Senses.” The arch forms the western portal to the rose garden at the South Coast Botanic Gardens.
We were there for a visit to see all the beautiful spring flowers. Verna takes most of the pictures of the flowers, while I’m in charge of nerdy panoramas and 3D pictures.

Mom’s 89th Birthday
Happy birthday to my Mother, Kate.
Kate was born on April 23, 1920 and grew up in San Pedro and Long Beach, CA. She married my Dad in December 1938. Her children were born in 1941 (Bill), 1943 (that would be me), 1946 (Jim) and 1954 (Krystal). She has numerous grand kids and great-grand kids.
Mom currently lives in the foothills near the Sunland/Tujunga area.
Happy Birthday Mom – We love you!
Lizard in 3D
I took this 3D image of a small brown lizard on our recent visit to the Botanic Gardens. I found it perched on a chunk of dried out wood in the cactus and succulents garden. It posed long enough for me to take the pair of images necessary for the 3D effect. Click on the image to enlarge.
I was surprised at the number and variety of lizards on the USGS web page that are indigenous to the California Coastal area. This one is likely a ‘small scaled lizard,’ commonly found in both southern California and Baja.
