Canyon del Muerto – 3D

canyon-muerto.pngCanyon de Chelly National Monument was established April 1, 1931, as a unit of the National Park Service and is located in northeastern Arizona within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation. The monument covers 131 square miles (339 km2) and encompasses the floors and rims of the three major canyons: de Chelly, del Muerto, and Monument. These canyons were cut by streams with headwaters in the Chuska mountains just to the east of the monument.

This image comes from a pair of images I took last July 22nd during our visit to the del Muerto side of Canyon de Chelly. Click on the image above to see a larger version. If you don’t have your 3D glasses handy you can see a version of Canyon del Muerto in 2D by clicking on the link.

A Red Rose in Mom’s Garden

moms-red-rose.jpgToday, we drove to Mom and Dad’s to deliver the pumpkin pie I baked yesterday. Dad really appreciated the pie.

As always, I brought my camera and took a lot of pictures in and around Mom’s garden and flowerbeds. In the front of the house, she has a rosebush that produces these pretty red roses. This one is new since last weekend.

Winter Canyon from Lookout Studio

Here is one of the photos Verna took the morning we were at the Grand Canyon Village. This is looking northeast near Bright Angel Trail Head. The icicles are hanging from the famous Lookout Studio near Bright Angel Lodge.

Lookout Studio Icicles and Grand Canyon

I was at the dentist this morning and I told my hygienist to check out our blog for some pictures we took at Grand Canyon on our Winter Cruise. Then, I realized that this photo (one of the prettiest) wasn’t posted on this weblog. Better late than never.

Photographing the Photographer

We went to visit Mom and Dad over the weekend. While we were there, Verna spotted a little butterfly perched on a flower growing out front of the house. She pointed her Canon XTi camera at the butterfly and I pointed my little Canon A710 at her. I superimposed the shot she took of the butterfly (circled) on the photo that I took of her. Light Cruiser USS Brooklyn

This is the USS Brooklyn, CL-40 with Palisades Park in the background, as she cruises along the Hudson River near New York City. My Dad was an Electricians Mate, First Class, on this vessel.

The Brooklyn departed from Norfolk for the Mediterranean on 24 October 1942. My 20 month old brother, Billy, and Mom were in Norfolk to give Dad a send-off. Mom and Billy then took the train back to California, where I was born about 9 months, or so, afterward.

Dad did not meet me until I was 18 months old, since he and the Brooklyn were engaging the Axis in the Mediterranean. Rommel was there, Montgomery was there, Patton was there and the USS Brooklyn’s 5 and 6 inch guns were there helping the Allies to victory.

Death Valley Ranch House in 3D

ranch-houseWhen we went through Death Valley on our Winter Vacation, we went to Scotty’s Castle, which is a must see attraction there. The castle is only a part of the greater ranch that ‘Scotty’ actually did not build.

It actually belonged to and was built by Albert Johnson. This desert mansion, begun in 1922, was where Johnson’s family entertained many guests. The castle is a blend of Moorish, Spanish, Italian and California Mission architecture. Death Valley Scotty was the caretaker of the castle.

I formed this image (click on it for the full size) from a pair of photos shot near the clock tower on the ranch. If you don’t have your free pair of 3D glasses yet, here is the link to the two-dimensional version.
