Vintage Ford Truck

I was at the dentist this morning for cleaning and checkup. I arrived a little early so I sat in the parking lot for a while. A few minutes before my appointment time, a gentleman arrived in this very cherry Ford panel truck – painted bright yellow. I took a couple of photos of it including this pair of pictures merged into a 3D image. You will need red/blue or red/cyan glasses to see the 3D effect. Visit my 3D gallery for this and more.

Euro Architecture in the South Bay

We passed this interesting building while driving along Anaheim Street in Wilmington last week. It is surprising to see this very European-looking entryway with intricate scroll work and a caprice figurehead.

An internet search on ‘European Architecture” turned up a link to a very interesting website: an Architecture Glossary by Roberta Barresi. The glossary is highly illustrated with photos of many European examples of architecture and has a thorough definition for many esoteric architectural styles and objects.

San Pedro Art Deco Architecture

warner-grand.jpgI am a long-time admirer of Art Deco. Mom and Dad used to collect, buy and sell antiques, many of which were art deco pieces. I learned to appreciate art deco for it’s graceful curves and stark zig-zags – it is just elegant.

I recently read a book about Long Beach Art Deco, which is a historical look at the city as it was rebuilt after the devastating 1933 earthquake. It was a fascinating account with lots of black and white pictures taken of the disaster and the emerging structures.

If you read our blog, you know that we like to visit the beaches and the harbor in San Pedro. While on a recent trip to the harbor, we toured around looking at the art deco buildings. Some of it is just beautiful, but some of it, sadly, needs more tender loving care.

One fabulous example of an art deco structure that does get TLC is the Warner Grand Theater on 6th Avenue. This building is a time tunnel to the 1930s and 1940s. I think could stand here and absorb all the wonderful details for hours. Click on the picture to enlarge.

Crown of Thorns

These pretty red flowers grow on a thorny shrub we call ‘crown of thorns.’ This shrub is said to be the same that grew in the Mediterranean area at the time of Christ. It may have been the actual crown of thorns which the Romans put on Jesus’ head when he was crucified.
