Black-Headed Grosbeak

Black-Headed Grosbeak

I noticed a bird at the bell feeder that I didn’t recognize. According to Stokes’ Field Guide to Birds. this is probably a first-year male Black-Headed Grosbeak. Wikipedia notes that this species is highly migratory and winters in Mexico. This one must have been just passing through when he found our seed bell this morning. Click on the image to enlarge.

The Weird Cactus Gets A Flower

Weird Cactus

I brought this cactus from California just after we moved here over three years ago. I don’t know the name of this variety of cactus, but it has long arms that hang over the side of the pot. This is the first and only flower that opened up on this unusual cactus since it’s been here in Arizona. Click on the image to enlarge.
