Marjan Roses

Marjan Roses

These beautiful salmon pink roses have been gracing our great room since we brought them home last Thursday. Very pretty!

I did an internet search and found a description of Marjan roses at FiftyFlowers.com:

A fresh salmon orange rose, Marjan has a slender head with a high petal count that fully opens into a classic bloom. Its color is unique, and often described as a dark pinkish-orange. For a fiery effect, combine this rose with any hot or light pink wedding bouquet, table centerpiece or flower arrangement.

Hidden Hedgehog Cactus

Hidden Hedgehog Cactus

We discovered another hedgehog cactus behind one of the palo verde trees on the hill behind our house. It is surrounded by deadwood and low shrubs. One of these days, I’m tempted to dig it up, transfer it to a large pot and bring it down to the courtyard. Hedgehog cacti produce brilliant pink flowers in the spring.

Upside Down Thistle Feeder

Upside Down Thistle Feeder

We have a new goldfinch feeder – a Perky Pet Upside Down Thistle Feeder. We got it from Amazon.com last week just to try it out.

The product description on Amazon follows:

Keep undesirable house finches and larger birds away from your finch feeders with this unique finch feeder. It’s designed to attract goldfinches, who can easily feed upside down while other species cannot. Holds up to 2 pounds of thistle seed or finch mix. Features plastic squirrel-resistant cap and perches. Cap slides along a hanging bail for ease of filling. Weather-resistant 18 inch feeder tube. Six upside-down feeding ports & perches. Feeder empties completely leaving no residue.

The feeder hangs from a garden crook just outside of the courtyard where we can see it through the front window. Click on the image to enlarge.

Gambel’s Quail

Gambel’s Quail

When I replace the seed bell and block in the feeders on the hill behind our house, a few loose seeds spill down the slope. They aren’t wasted, however, since the quail find them and help themselves. This is a male Gambel’s Quail browsing the slope for seeds. Click on the image to enlarge.

New Family Portrait

Family Portrait

We were just getting ready to go to the supermarket today, when I grabbed my little Canon A710-IS camera, set it on the courtyard wall and got this picture of us and the two min pins. The camera has an ingenious option to set the automatic delay timer countdown audio to sound like a puppy whining. Notice the dogs both alerted on it and faced the camera as the shutter snapped.
