Wildflowers in the Gutter

wildflower.jpg

Earlier this month, when we were on vacation, we saw wildflowers everywhere it seemed. Today, while out running errands, Verna snapped this picture of a pair of pink wildflowers growing out of a crack in the concrete gutter. I guess when you’re in an urban location, vacant land is few and far between and the wildflowers have to find somewhere to grow.

Web Drops

No – it doesn’t have anything to do with the internet.

Verna took this photo today after the gentle rain cleared up and before the droplets on the spider web evaporated. I think it’s an interesting effect. Click on the image to enlarge.

Winter Harvest

harvest.jpgVerna planted several varieties of tomatoes in the patio and garden last year. A couple of the vines produced normal-sized tomatoes and there was another vine that grew cherry tomatoes – you know – the little bite-sized ones for salads or just for popping into your mouth.

I was in the patio yesterday and noticed a ripe cherry tomato on the vine – one of the last ones for the season. I picked it and brought it in to show Verna. She took this picture that shows the size of the tomato relative to a U.S. quarter dollar. She remarked that it was like “airline-sized food.” We had a good laugh over that.

Stickers

This cactus has some nasty little spines. Twice now, Bear has picked up one of the little sticker-laden balls of cactus that fall from the plant. Luckily, they stuck in her fur and not her skin. We’re steering clear of these from now on.

Poinsettia Bowl

Tonight we’re watching a football bowl game – the “San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.” I guess that bowl game sponsorship is important these days, but could we just have them call it the “Poinsettia Bowl” and mention all the sponsorship stuff in a subtitle? It probably won’t happen, but it would be nice.

Meanwhile, take a look at this nice poinsettia growing on the front porch. Image credit, Verna. Click to enlarge.
