One of Many Cactus Flowers

It was difficult to pick which one of these gorgeous blossoms to post on the website today. When I got up this morning, I estimate there were a dozen of these that opened last night.

In this close-up shot of one flower, you can see more buds developing in the background. I’m pretty sure that we will have new flowers daily for the rest of this month. Click on the image for the 1024×768 version.

Tiger Lily

tiger-lily.jpgThere seems to be several varieties of orange lilies that are referred to as “Tiger Lily.” This spotted orange lily is one of those varieties.

The colors here are orange with deep maroon spots – not exactly like black tiger stripes, but evidently close enough for the nickname. I’m OK with that, otherwise I’d have to call it “Lilium lancifolium,” which takes all the romance out of it.

Balloon Cactus

A few weeks ago I bought a Balloon Cactus. Today, it produced this bright yellow flower. The tag that was with the cactus called it a Parodia magnifica. I don’t know about the parodia part of it, but the flower is certainly magnifica . . .

Just in Time for Flag Day

We went shopping at our local discount merchandise store to get a few things we saw in their sale flyer. While we were there I spotted this patriotic pinwheel in the garden department. It became mine. This is a photo I took of it after putting it in our patio garden today.

The anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 was officially established by Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916. While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson’s proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.
