Unique Topology

This aerial photo of the Isthmus of Santa Catalina Island shows Catalina Harbor and Isthmus Harbor – each within walking distance of the other. This year when we take our annual trek to the Island, we plan to visit Two Harbors, either by inland tour or an evening boat cruise.

A Crummy Commercial?

Here’s an unusual photo opportunity – a scenic lighthouse with an island in the background with a seagull flying above – thrown into the mix this time, however, is a crummy commercial.

I think the occupants were there trying to spot migrating whales. Taken today at Point Vicente.

Altocumulus Lenticularis

altocumulus-lenticularis.jpgLenticular (lens-shaped) clouds indicate an atmospheric wave condition, where the wind follows an up and down path, often in the downwind side of mountains. Pilots know that this condition and the appearance of lenticular clouds means there is a very high likelihood of moderate to severe to extreme turbulence in the area.

This particular cloud seen here was west of Point Vicente on the California Coast in October after some rain moved through the area. Click on the image for a larger view.
