Sunflower Eclipse

A couple of weekends ago, Verna got this shot of a sunflower at the Botanic Garden. The sun was in the sky directly behind the sunflower – kinda like a solar-flower eclipse or something.

Pink Ginger Blossom

ginger.jpgWe recently acquired this beautiful Curcuma Ginger from Lowe’s Garden Shop. We always seem to find beautiful flowers at our local Lowe’s. Click on the image for a larger view.

More about this nice variety from Aloha Tropicals:

Curcumas are the unimaginable world of hidden gingers, which get its name from some of the varieties because they bare their flowers on short stalks amid its foliage. Foliage is lush, broad and sometimes pleated. Curcumas love filtered light or light shade and enjoy moist soil. Blooms appear spring, summer or fall depending on variety.

Happy Independence Day!

patriot-bouquet.jpgAside from a couple of minor chores, we relaxed and enjoyed the day off today. We barbecued brats and hot dogs with sides of roasted potato spears and pasta veggie salad. Excellent! We’ll be watching fireworks this evening from the back balcony, where we have a fine view of the Wilson Park fireworks exhibit. Verna took this picture of these patriotic flowers, which are our bouquet of the week in honor of the Independence Day celebration. Click for a bigger view.

The Last of the Pinks

pink-star.jpgLast for this season, that is. We’re looking forward to next spring to see how many little pink flowers this Eschevaria will produce. There were a lot this year, and we hope there will be as many next year, too. We plan to transfer the parent plant to a larger pot and let it propagate. Who knows how many we might get then? Catalina WebCams

A couple of companies on Catalina Island feature web cameras on their internet sites. These folks have made the code available to display the webcam images on our pages, so I have added a new feature, Catalina Island WebCams under the Potpourri menu in the left sidebar. That page offers previews of the webcams in a small window. For the full-sized webcams, check out this larger view. The picture below is an image captured after dark last weekend. You can see the Hotel Metropole (our favorite place to stay there) just to the left of and above the arch next to the Tuna Club in the center of the picture. We’ll be staying there again this fall for our wedding anniversary.
