Pink Hyacinth

pink-hyacinthAlso called Dutch Hyacinths due to the cultivation and breeding that started in Holland in the 17th century. Native to the eastern Mediterranean and the southern part of Turkey. It still grows in abundance in the surroundings of Baghdad and Aleppo. These flowers are extremely fragrant.

Sweet scented Hyacinths are favorites in the garden or as potted plants. In the garden they look their best mass planted in blocks of one color. They are widely grown commercially both for cut flowers and as potted flowering plants. Individual flowers are densely crowded into the stem, making a solid looking flower head. Bulbs usually flower best in their first year, the second and subsequent years producing fewer, looser blooms.

Lily of the Valley

Reliably, every February since it’s been in the back yard, this lily of the valley virtually explodes with these beautiful tiny bell-shaped blossoms. It produces little bells throughout the spring and into the summer and fall months before briefly hibernating in the winter.
