The Little Red Schoolhouse

Little Red Schoolhouse

Since we were in California on our regular shopping day (Thursday), we went to the grocery store this morning. The store we went to is located in the old historic part of Wickenburg. This old schoolhouse is right next to the store. It sure looked pretty in the morning sunlight. Click on the image to enlarge.

Flag Day – Belated Post

I’m a few days late posting about Flag Day, but I will post this photo from last year. The image was taken in old downtown Wickenburg where the local American Legion Post placed these flags. The Post places roughly 300 flags on the main drags all around town. Click on the image to enlarge.

The Big House of Wupatki National Monument

This is the Wukoki ruins in Wupatki National Monument. Wukoki is a modern Hopi word meaning “big house.” I took this image today as we went through Sunset Crater and Wupatki on our way from Flagstaff to Page, AZ. The ruins in the area are very well preserved and to my delight were accessible along a short foot path. Unlike Casa Grande (also meaning “big House”) near Coolidge, AZ, I could walk directly into this big house that was built over 900 years ago. Click on the image to enlarge.

Vulture Mine Historical Marker in 3D

This is an accidental 3D image that Verna took of the Vulture Mine Historical Marker near US 60 and Vulture Mine Road in Wickenburg, AZ. I say “accidental” because she snapped two images of the same scene as the truck rolled slowly down the road. I took her pair of images and combined them into a red cyan anaglyphic image that can be viewed with a pair of 3D glasses. Click on the image to enlarge.

The Vulture Mine Historical Marker is located about 12 miles north of the actual Vulture Mine itself. The remnants of Vulture City which sprang up in the mine’s heyday are scattered around the mine shaft. There is a souvenir shop in one of the old buildings where you can get your map of the self-guided tour of the area.

Just in case you don’t have your pair of 3D glasses handy, you can see the 2D image here.

What’s For Dinner?

stpaddy.gifSince Verna and I both have some Irish heritage, we seldom fail to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a traditional Irish-style corned beef and cabbage dinner. Verna makes a delicious horseradish sauce to compliment the meat. We didn’t have any Irish beer, so I enjoyed my meal with a Samuel Adams Alpine Spring beer.
