Work

Chore Day

q-palm.jpgWhen we returned to our California house yesterday, I was greeted with several drooping fronds on the two queen palm trees out front. I never know what to expect when we get here, but there’s always several things to do.

So, after Verna’s annual eye exam today, I got the eighteen foot tree tool out of the garage and commenced sawing off the drooping fronds. I think there were about six fronds between the two trees that needed removal. The job took me over two hours including clean up.

The second chore I did was to go through all the junk mail our neighbor collected and shred anything with personally identifiable information and recycle the rest. We always request the USPS to hold all mail for this address, but given they are a government entity, you probably know how well that worked out. ?@&*%$! USPS.

Party Time

Today was my retirement farewell party thrown by the company. I invited friends, colleagues and family to the back room of The Sizzler for a luncheon and send-off. I posed with my Mother-in-Law, Janie, for this photo.

Retirement Plan

Elsewhere on this website, I have a countdown to retirement page that features a big animated cartoonish clock and a decrementing countdown timer.

This morning at 08:55:56 the timer hit the following milestone:

44444

Today, my lucky number is ‘4.’

An Unexpected Inconvenience

Battery ReplacementYesterday morning, I got in the truck to head to work. To my chagrin, instead of a cranking noise I got a clanking noise – the battery was almost dead.

Fortunately, we keep one of those little portable jump start batteries in the garage for just such an event. Verna seldom goes anywhere in her car and sometimes her battery gets drained by all those little electronics in the car that don’t turn off when you shut off the engine. We got the jump battery for her, but now it would come in handy to get me going on my way to work. I hooked it up to the battery terminals and cranked the truck over with no problem. Success!

I was at work for a half day session and then came home to address the battery problem. The little jump battery went with me and, as expected, was needed again. When I got home, I removed the old battery and Verna took me to get a new one. She took the picture above while I was installing the replacement.

Bottom line, the little jumper can save you a call to AAA, thus getting you going sooner.

Manhattan Marriott Panorama

Now that I’m back in the Manhattan Beach office, I can take my after-lunch walks down past the Marriott Hotel. I paused last week to take this three frame panorama from the northwest corner of the property.

The New Office

officeLast year, I was in temporary quarters on my way to an office location in a facility we mockingly call the “Dog House.” I spent the next several months working at that location until some work came up back at the facility where I spent most of my time over the last 9 years. I found out that I’m going to get a nice office when the arrangements for the move are complete. It has a nice view, too, looking out over a beach community shopping center and a park.
